The following letter to the editor was published in the March 2, 2005 issue of the San Lorenzo Valley Press. It is reprinted here with the permission of the author.

Editor,
There was a small chemical spill recently at the Felton Water District. Thanks to the location of the Water District office to our fire station, Cal-Am employees received prompt and efficient help. The Santa Cruz County Environmental Health Department also came out and made recommendations such as the need to label the chemical containers.

This accident did not result in any harm but it is illustrative of the concern I have with Cal-Am providing one manager whose responsibilities cover the Felton and Monterey Water Districts as well as with the proposed further consolidation between Felton and the much larger district of Monterey. I am also concerned about the safety of the workers in the workplace: were the workers involved trained in chemical handling? If chemical handling is part of their job, are they certified operators?
